What Is a Drug Panel?

A drug panel is a group of drug tests performed on one specimen to check for selected substances. The panel may screen for several drug classes at once, based on the testing program or request. Results show whether the tested substances are detected, not a person’s overall health or fitness.

Key Takeaways About Drug Panel

  • A panel covers selected substances, not every possible drug.
  • The test method and specimen type affect the result.
  • A drug panel is not the same as a general health exam.

How Drug Panel Works

Medical supplies, urine cups, pill bottles, and a spine model sit on a desk in a clinic setting

A drug panel checks one specimen for a stated group of substances. The panel name tells the testing provider what substances to examine. A urine specimen is common, but the required specimen depends on the testing program.

The test begins with specimen collection and identity checks. The specimen then goes to a laboratory or approved testing process. An initial screen may lead to confirmatory testing when a result needs closer review. A Medical Review Officer may assess certain results and related records.

For DOT Drug Testing, the panel supports a regulated workplace testing process. The report records the result for the substances included in that panel.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we handle DOT Drug Testing, we confirm the requested panel and collect the specimen under the required process. We check identification and paperwork before the specimen moves forward. Our team records the result for the substances included in the panel.

Drug Panel in Practice: A Real-World Example

A commercial driver arrives for DOT Drug Testing after an employer requests a drug panel. The collection process checks the driver’s identity, gathers the specimen, and sends the required information with it for review.
