What Is Range Of Motion?

Range Of Motion is the amount and direction a joint can move through its available movement path. Clinicians assess it during active movement, when you move the joint yourself, and passive movement, when an examiner guides it. Findings may describe reduced, normal, or excessive movement in a joint or body region.

How Range Of Motion Works

Range Of Motion describes joint movement in a specific direction. A person may actively move a joint, or an examiner may guide the movement passively. The comparison helps show whether muscles, joints, connective tissues, or symptoms affect the available motion.

An assessment considers the quality of movement as well as its extent. Smooth movement may differ from movement that feels restricted, uneven, or uncomfortable. The cervical spine and lumbar spine are common regions checked after a work injury because head, neck, and back movement may change after lifting, falling, or repetitive tasks.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess Range Of Motion during Work Injury Treatment, we observe how a person moves and ask about symptoms during each direction. We compare active movement with guided movement when appropriate. These observations help us document functional changes and shape the clinical examination.

Range Of Motion in Practice: A Real-World Example

A warehouse worker reports back discomfort after lifting a box. During the examination, forward bending appears limited and turning feels uneven, so Range Of Motion findings become part of the work injury assessment.
