What Is a Ligament?

A ligament is a strong band of connective tissue that joins one bone to another and helps guide and limit movement at a joint. Ligaments support joint stability, but they do not contract like muscles. A stretched or torn ligament is commonly associated with a sprain, which can affect movement and comfort.

Key Takeaways About Ligament

  • Ligaments connect bone to bone at joints.
  • Ligament injuries are called sprains.
  • Ligaments are not the same as tendons.

How Ligament Works

Ligament tissue connects neighboring bones and supports the structure of a joint. Its fibers resist unwanted movement while allowing normal motion. The tissue responds to forces such as twisting, sudden stopping, or impact during sports activity.

A sprain develops when a ligament is stretched beyond its normal range or damaged. A clinician considers the injury site, swelling, tenderness, movement, and joint stability during an assessment. The sprain may involve one ligament or several structures around the same joint. A tendon has a different role because it connects muscle to bone and transfers muscle force.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess a sports injury, we review the movement that caused symptoms and examine the involved joint. We consider ligament stability alongside nearby muscles, tendons, and joint motion. Our findings help distinguish a possible sprain from other sources of pain and guide the next step in care.

Ligament in Practice: A Real-World Example

A soccer player lands awkwardly after a jump and feels pain near the ankle. During Sports Injury Treatment, the clinician checks joint motion and stability while considering whether a ligament sprain may be involved.
