What Is a Vertebra?

A vertebra is one of the individual bones that forms the spinal column. Each vertebra has a body, an arch, and openings that help support the spine and protect the spinal cord. Vertebrae connect through joints, discs, and ligaments, allowing the back and neck to bend, rotate, and bear weight.

How Vertebra Works

A vertebra works as part of a connected spinal structure. Its body carries much of the load, while the arch surrounds the passage for the spinal cord. Small projections provide attachment points for muscles and ligaments, and paired joints guide movement between neighboring bones.

Vertebrae are arranged in regions of the spine, including the neck, mid-back, and lower back. Cushioned discs sit between many vertebrae and help distribute force during movement. In chiropractic adjustment, the provider considers the position and motion of the relevant spinal segments before applying a controlled manual force.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess a vertebra, we consider its location, joint motion, surrounding muscle tension, and the person’s reported symptoms. Our team relates those findings to the goals of a Chiropractic Adjustment and checks movement before and after care.

Vertebra in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with restricted neck movement may have an assessment focused on the cervical vertebrae and nearby joints. The chiropractor may use those findings to guide a controlled Chiropractic Adjustment.
