What Is a Disc Bulge?

A disc bulge is a condition where the outer part of a spinal disc extends beyond its usual edge. The disc may press against nearby tissues, including a nerve root. Some disc bulges cause no symptoms, while others may relate to back pain, leg pain, numbness, or weakness.

Key Takeaways About Disc Bulge

  • The outer disc wall extends beyond its usual edge.
  • Symptoms depend on nearby nerve pressure and the affected spinal level.
  • A disc bulge isn't the same as a fully herniated disc.

How Disc Bulge Works

Disc Bulge describes a change in the shape of an intervertebral disc. The disc's outer ring extends past the edges of the nearby vertebrae. The inner disc material usually stays contained within the outer ring.

A bulge may affect a nerve root when it narrows the space around that nerve. The location helps explain symptoms. A bulge in the lumbar spine may relate to lower back or leg symptoms. A bulge in the cervical spine may relate to neck, shoulder, or arm symptoms.

Disc herniation describes a more focused tear or opening in the outer disc ring. Imaging findings and a physical exam help place a bulge in context. A scan alone doesn't show how a person feels or moves.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess a disc bulge, we review the reported symptoms, movement limits, and available imaging. We also check whether the findings fit the area of pain or nerve-related symptoms. Our team uses that information when planning care connected to Herniated Disc Treatment.

Disc Bulge in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with a lumbar disc bulge may feel lower back pain that travels into the leg. During an evaluation at Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City, we consider the symptom pattern along with movement and exam findings.
