What Is a Trigger Point?

Trigger Point is a sensitive, tense area within a muscle that may produce local discomfort or refer discomfort to another area when pressed. These areas often feel like firm bands or small knots. A trigger point describes a muscular finding, not a diagnosis, injury, or separate body structure.

  • A trigger point lies within muscle tissue.
  • Pressure may reproduce discomfort in a nearby or distant area.
  • A trigger point is not the same as a muscle injury.

How Trigger Point Works

Hands pressing a person’s shoulder with a red pain glow in a therapy room

A trigger point is identified through touch and the muscle response that follows pressure. The area may feel tighter than nearby tissue, and pressure can reproduce a familiar sensation in the same muscle or another connected area. The finding helps a practitioner understand how muscle tension may relate to a person’s complaint.

During Massage Therapy, a practitioner may assess the surrounding muscle, compare tissue sensitivity, and apply pressure suited to the person’s response. The practitioner may also work along nearby muscle fibers because tension can involve more than one small area. Changes in comfort and tissue ease help guide the session, but they do not establish a medical diagnosis.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractor Garden City team

When we assess a trigger point during Massage Therapy, we check the surrounding muscle and ask whether pressure reproduces a familiar sensation. We adjust contact and pressure based on the person’s response. We also consider nearby muscle tension so our work addresses the broader pattern, not only the most tender spot.

Trigger Point in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with tight upper shoulder muscles may notice a tender spot that sends discomfort toward the neck when pressed. During Massage Therapy, we may assess that spot and the surrounding muscles before choosing a focused approach.
